Daresbury Laboratory

In March 2006, the Treasury-led budget report, “Science and Innovation: Next Steps 2004 – 2014” created the Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus (Daresbury SIC) and the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire. Together, the two campuses form what has become known as the Campus ‘Dipole’ Model - internationally renowned centres of scientific excellence. In particular it states “The Government will look to develop these campuses so as to ensure that the facilities located there are internationally-competitive, support world class science, and maximize opportunities for knowledge transfer.”

Daresbury SIC is a unique collaboration involving the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster, the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), the Science and Technology Facilities Council and Halton Borough Council.

Daresbury Laboratory forms a integral part of the Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus in Cheshire, and is one of the Councils world-class, large scale research facilities. Their facilities are used by more than 5,000 scientists and engineers, mainly from the university research community. Overall, the laboratory employs 550 staff.

The Science and Technology Facilities Council is part of the Office of Science and Innovation which itself is part of the Department of Trade and Industry. The Council makes it possible for a broad range of scientists to do the highest quality research, tackling some of the most fundamental scientific questions and provides strategic advice to the UK government on their development. It also manages international research projects in support of a broad cross-section of the UK research community.

“We chose Goldeneye UK because of the their sound track record in the supply, installation,
testing commissioning and bring into service - CCTV systems over IP.
We chose Mobotix because the product was robust, well designed and incorporated many
enhancing features which delivered suitable and sufficient security information to safe guard the
health, safety and welfare of the staff, visitors and contractors on Daresbury Laboratory site."
Project Manager - Keith Cope, Head of Network Support at Daresbury Laboratory.

Paul Driver, Managing Director of Goldeneye UK comments “Daresbury were seeking to install an advanced surveillance system to prevent crime and assist in the well being, health and safety of their staff and the high number of visiting scientists and clients. We were delighted and honoured when we were asked to provide the solution to this world class research facility.

During the pretender selection stage Goldeneye UK were given the opportunity to demonstrate the Mobotix camera system, which offers a performance and quality which is measurably above the competition and therefore became the preferred technology solution offering a high quality, stable in performance, minimal maintenance solution with the lowest overall life cycle cost for Daresbury Laboratory in the long term.

He adds “This was a large project which involved the installation of over 70 network IP cameras across the whole of the Daresbury Laboratory campus. The Mobotix CCTV over IP solution, enabled Daresbury Laboratory to maximise the utilisation of the existing structured data cabling and infrastructure, which meant less disruption and greater certainty of project delivery and timescales.

Keith Cope adds, “The installation went well due to Goldeneye’s core competencies in understanding the Technology Solutions and being able to plan, resource and project manage. The installation and supply chain for this project was managed well and delivered on time.”

“Goldeneye service and support to date has been professional, technically sound and any minor issues resolved in a timely manner, against a background of good communications. The system training with Security Officers has been pitched just right to match their varying ability range.
